The 'Deutscher Verband der Ergotherapeuten' (DVE) is the only professional body representing the interests of occupational therapists in Germany. It was founded in 1954, in 1958 became the twelfth member of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) and in 1986 was one of the founding members of COTEC.

The aims of the Association are to

  • achieve the best possible therapy and rehabilitation for the sick and disabled,
  • provide professional support for the members,
  • develop and further the profession of occupational therapy,
  • represent the interests of members of the profession

Some of the main aspects of the work of the DVE are:-

  • To ensure an adequate provision of OT services in primary care, in hospitals and in the rehabilitation services
  • To maintain contact with all the decision taking and political institutions
  • To ensure that the professional educational standards are maintained, developed and improved.
  • To develop and maintain quality assurance methods for the profession and for the professional education.

In particular the association is working to establish the training in higher education and to develop standards for the training of specialist occupational therapists.
